Being home to the fourth-largest natural gas reserves in the world, Turkmenistan’s role has been limited by its landlocked status. The country also remains beset by geopolitical challenges that limit its ability to assume a role as an importer/exporter in broader hydrocarbon markets. The country's oil reserves pale in comparison to its gas reserves at a mere 600 million barrels estimated as of 2020, and little seen having been added since then.
