Market Watch

Even with temperatures across the US poised to drop to historic lows later this week, January gas futures dove 74.9¢ Monday to $5.851/MMBtu. January has lost $1.119 in a two-session swan dive, a counterintuitive move apparently driven by large players closing positions ahead of the Christmas break. The 12-month strip fell 30.3¢ to $5.24; the 2024 strip was down 2.7¢ to $4.723.

WTI January crude rose 90¢ to $75.19/bbl.

This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were down 69¢ at $5.91. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went down $9.50 to average $8.50, while Boston-area Algonquin declined $3.73 to average $13.42. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose $2.62 to $32.25, SoCal Citygate advanced $2.49 to average $36.46 and Northwest Sumas gained $1.37 to average $30.15. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco rose 27¢ to $5.32.

After months of publicly rebuking the oil and gas industry for raking in massive profits while remaining reluctant to increase output, US officials took a gentler tack last week. US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm in remarks to the executives participating in the National Petroleum Council expressed “deep gratitude” to the industry for coming to meetings “over and over again” on production and refining, the use of the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve, ethanol requirements, and a potential rail strike. She also avoided criticizing the industry again for posting record profits, with only a brief reference that it had been a "good year for many" in the room despite the energy crisis.
