Market Watch

January gas futures dropped 70.4¢ Monday to $5.577 per million Btu, capping a four-session $1.658 freefall that some suspect will soon reverse. Why? Because conflicting outlooks for a cold rather than warmish winter ahead present significant upside risk. The 12-month strip fell 37.6¢ to $4.973; the 2024 strip is $4.627 (Futures contracts).

WTI January crude fell $3.05 to $76.93/bbl.

Permian Basin benchmark Waha Hub saw the most significant price move of the day, falling $2.86 to 10¢/MMBtu. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were down 70¢ at $4.13. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went down $1.35 to average $3.95, while Boston-area Algonquin declined $1.90 to average $4.24. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose $3.50 to $17.04, SoCal Citygate advanced $1.86 to average $18.99 and Northwest Sumas gained 9¢ to average $16.86. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco fell 41¢ to $3.66 (Daily cash prices).

Dominion Energy has been given the green light to put a natural gas pipeline under the Blue Ridge Parkway in Buncombe County, North Carolina. National Park Service officials found that even during construction the pipeline will not have a "significant impact" on the parkway or the Mountains-to-Sea Trail as the work will be accomplished without using trenches. Neither the parkway nor the trail will need to be closed. The crossing will extend the 11 miles of already laid 12-inch diameter pipe, which starts at Duke Energy’s Asheville Energy Plant in Arden and parallels a Duke Energy electric power line. The project upgrades an existing aging system and drew no opposition from Asheville environmental nonprofit MountainTrue.

US regulators have requested more information on EQT’s $5.2 billion acquisition of upstream and midstream assets in Appalachia, delaying and potentially even derailing the completion of the deal. The request by the US Federal Trade Commission extends the statutory waiting period until 30 days after the parties have complied. That could push the closing of EQT's purchase of THQ Appalachia I and XcL Midstream, which was announced in September and expected to be completed in the fourth quarter, into 2023 — or result in it being abandoned or canceled. EQT said it was “cooperating fully” with the agency's request. The FTC has ramped up its scrutiny of consolidation in the oil and gas sector since US President Joe Biden took office in January 2021 amid soaring energy prices and concerns over "anti-consumer behavior."
