Market Watch

January 2023 gas futures fell 19.2¢ Thursday to $6.738 per million Btu, driven lower by dry gas production growth and the uncertain timing of the arrival of winter temperatures. The US Energy Information Administration pegged dry gas production in the week to Nov. 30 at 101.2 Bcf/d, up 0.5 Bcf/d from last week and 3.3 Bcf/d from the same week last year. Also Thursday, the US Senate passed a bill to avert a nationwide railroad strike, which President Biden is expected to sign. A strike could have disrupted coal shipments to utilities this winter, supporting power-sector gas burn.

The 2023 strip fell 3.6¢ to $5.709; the 2024 strip slipped 0.2¢ to $4.781 (Futures contracts).

Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose $1.29 to $17.32, SoCal Citygate declined 6¢ to average $19.18 and Northwest Sumas gained $2.37 to average $18.94. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco fell 54¢ to $4.69 (Daily cash prices).

The US Energy Information Administration reported an 81 Bcf storage draw for the week ended Nov. 25, decreasing net working gas inventories to 3,483 Bcf. The injection compares with a five-year average draw of 34 Bcf and a year-ago pull of 54 Bcf. The deficit to the five-year average climbed to 86 Bcf, or 2.4%. The deficit to last year reached 89 Bcf, or 2.5%. Next week's data is expected to show a 40 Bcf withdrawal versus a five-year average withdrawal of 59 Bcf (Storage).
