Market Watch

December gas futures edged up 0.3¢ to $6.776 per million Btu on Tuesday, falling back from an advance on $7. But while December topped out at $6.976 Tuesday, the forward curve surged, with the remaining winter contracts up almost 20¢ at the close. Why? Traders might be factoring in a milder end to November and heavier demand beginning next month, or anticipating the restart of Freeport LNG in mid-December. The 12-month strip rose 9¢ to $5.723; the 2023 calendar strip was up 9.2¢ to $5.637 (Futures contracts).

WTI January crude rose 91¢ to $80.95/bbl on its first day as prompt month.

In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub rose 11¢ to average $5.05. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose 75¢ to $9.60, SoCal Citygate advanced $1.02 to average $10.47 and Northwest Sumas gained $1.75 to average $10.70. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco fell 42¢ to $4.71 (Daily gas prices).

New Fortress Energy has finalized agreements with Pemex to create an integrated LNG project off Mexico’s southeastern Gulf coast near Veracruz. NFE will secure supply by developing the Lakach deepwater natural gas field, which Pemex discovered in 2007 but ceased developing in 2014. Lakach and two nearby gas fields contain an estimated 3.3 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, which could supply the project for more than a decade. NFE will deploy its 1.4 million tons per year capacity Sevan Driller FLNG unit to liquefy more than 125 million cubic feet per day of produced gas, which it will buy from Pemex at a contracted rate. Pemex will sell the remaining gas volumes and liquids to its customers onshore.
