December gas futures fell 36¢ to $5.879 per million Btu Friday, capping a second week of extraordinary volatility as the market transitions from a warm shoulder season to early winter cold. December soared 4% to $6.505 in early trading, but ended the day down 5.8%. The contract lost 50.2¢ for the week. The 12-month strip fell 19.9¢ to $5.199; the 2023 calendar strip was down 18¢ to $5.167 (Futures contracts).

WTI December crude rose $2.49 to $88.96/bbl, still down $3.65 for the week.

The US rig count climbed 9 to 779 last week, up 223 from a year ago, Baker Hughes reported. Gas-directed rigs held at 155, up 53 from a year ago, while oil rigs climbed nine to 622, up 168 from a year ago. The data show the bulk of the increase in year-over-year activity is in the Permian Basin, up 78 rigs to 350, followed distantly by the Eagle Ford Shale, up 30 to 71. The Haynesville Shale rig count is up 25 at 71 (Rig counts).
