Market Watch

December gas futures tumbled as hard on Tuesday as they surged on Monday. The contract fell 65.1¢ to $5.714 per million Btu, losing all but 3¢ of Monday’s spike in an apparent wave of profit taking. LNG feedstock growth might have played into the tug of war between bulls and bears. While on Monday traders clearly reacted to the restart Oct. 28 of Cove Point LNG in Maryland, the move was also goosed by expectations for Freeport LNG in Texas to come back on line after being idled for five months by an explosion and fire. On Tuesday, federal regulators reiterated that they still needed to sign off on the repairs before Freeport operations can restart. The 12-month strip fell 25.1¢ to $5.093; the 2023 strip was off 20.3¢ to $5.075 (Futures contracts).

WTI December crude rose $1.84 to $88.37/bbl.

In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went down 14¢ to average $3.11, while Boston-area Algonquin declined 34¢ to average $3.54. In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub fell $1.09 to average $2.42. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose $1.36 to $6.41, SoCal Citygate advanced $1.86 to average $7.70 and Northwest Sumas gained $1.85 to average $7.28 (Daily cash prices).

New Fortress Energy has finalized agreements with CFE, Mexico’s state-owned electric utility, to deepen its involvement in a number of energy projects around the country. Under the agreement to be signed Nov. 3, NFE will create a new floating LNG hub off the Gulf Coast state of Tamaulipas at Altamira. The FLNG hub will include multiple units of 1.4 million tons per year (0.2 Bcf/d) each that utilize CFE’s existing firm pipeline transportation capacity on TC Energy’s Sur de Texas-Tuxpan Pipeline to deliver feedgas volumes to NFE. NFE’s first FLNG unit, which is under construction at the Kiewit Offshore Services shipyard near Corpus Christi, Texas, is expected to start operations in spring 2023.
