Market Watch

A restored slug of feedgas demand at Cove Point LNG helped send December gas futures surging 67.1¢ Monday to $6.355 per million Btu. The largest single-day rally in six weeks was also amplified by firming outlooks for a cold second half of November. The 12-month strip rose 30.3¢ to $5.343; the 2023 calendar strip rose 25.8¢ to $5.278 (Futures contracts).

WTI December crude fell $1.37 to $8655/bbl.

As pipeline maintenance begins to wrap up in Western Canada, British Columbia's Westcoast Station 2 saw the most significant price move of the day, rising $2.79 to $3.53. Alberta benchmark Aeco rose $2.58 to $4.18. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were up 12¢ at $5.04. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went down 9¢ to average $3.25, while Boston-area Algonquin advanced 18¢ to average $3.88. In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub rose 62¢ to average $3.52. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal fell 23¢ to $5.04, SoCal Citygate advanced 9¢ to average $5.84 and Northwest Sumas lost 10¢ to average $5.44 (Daily cash prices).

Cove Point LNG restarted operations Oct. 28, ending a month-long planned outage for routine maintenance. The Maryland-based export project on Chesapeake Bay has taken in almost 3 billion cubic feet of gas, or about 744 million cubic feet per day, since resuming operations. Based on heavy utilization of Cove Point liquefaction capacity before the planned closure, the maintenance potentially sidelined more than 20 Bcf of gas demand. The US Energy Information Administration reported that US LNG feedstock demand averaged 11.5 Bcf/d last week, implying that feedgas demand could average close to 12.4 Bcf/d this week. As soon as the now-idle 2.1 Bcf/d Freeport LNG terminal in Texas restarts operations, average US LNG gas needs could easily top 14 Bcf/d.
