Market Watch

US gas futures tumbled Thursday, with the November contract falling 42¢ to roll off the board at $5.186 per million Btu. December fell 24.4¢ to take the lead position at $5.875/MMBtu. Thursday's drop came in the wake of an ostensibly bullish storage build. The 12-month strip fell 15.9¢ to $5.143; the 2023 strip was off 11.7¢ to $5.114 (Futures contracts).

WTI December crude rose $1.17 to $89.08/bbl.

The US Energy Information Administration reported a 52 Bcf storage build for the week ended Oct. 21, increasing net working gas inventories to 3,394 Bcf. The injection compares with a five-year average of 66 Bcf and a year-ago build of 88 Bcf. The deficit to the five-year average increased to 197 Bcf, or 5.5%. The deficit to last year climbed to 142 Bcf, or 4%. Next week's data is expected to show a 96 Bcf injection versus a five-year average of 45 Bcf (Storage).

Maintenance-related constraints improved in the Permian Basin with Transwestern East of Thoreau seeing the most significant price move of the day, rising $1.61 to 75¢/MMBtu. The Permian's Waha Hub rose $1.29 to average 60¢/MMBtu. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were up 6¢ at $5.30. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went up 4¢ to average $4.46, while Boston-area Algonquin advanced 23¢ to average $4.79. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose 1¢ to $5.57, SoCal Citygate advanced 8¢ to average $5.85 and Northwest Sumas gained 25¢ to average $6.30. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco fell $1.98 to 87¢/MMBtu (Daily cash prices).
