Market Watch

October gas futures plunged 69¢ to $7.089 per million Btu Thursday in the wake of an unexpectedly robust triple-digit storage build that seemingly confirmed just how bearish market fundaments have become. Nonetheless, a price rebound is likely as it's impossible to say if inventories on Oct. 31 will be adequate to meet heating season demand. The 12-month strip fell 38.5¢ to $6.063; the 2023 calendar strip was down 27¢ to $5.59 (Futures contracts).

WTI November crude rose 55¢ to $83.49/bbl.

The US Energy Information Administration reported a 103 Bcf storage build for the week ended Sep. 16, increasing net working gas inventories to 2,874 Bcf. The injection compares with a five-year average injection of 81 Bcf and a year-ago build of 77 Bcf. The deficit to the five-year average fell to 332 Bcf, or 10.4%. The deficit to last year declined to 197 Bcf, or 6.4%. Next week's data is expected to show an 86 Bcf injection versus a five-year average of 77 Bcf (Storage).
