Gas Markets

Market Watch

October gas futures edged 1.2¢ lower to $7.752 per million Btu as the market could be forming a potential floor in the mid-$7.70s ahead of winter. There are good reasons for traders to take gas lower — strong production gains and declining power burns among them. However, gas tends to rally in October with actual winter conditions still uncertain. There was less support for 2023 spring and summer contracts. The 12-month strip fell 3.6¢ to $6.56; the 2023 calendar strip fell 4.8¢ to $6.033 (Futures contracts).

WTI October crude, which rolls off the board Tuesday, rose 62¢ to $85.73/MMBtu.

Transwestern East of Thoreau in West Texas saw the most significant price move of the day, falling 90¢ to $4.96.
Cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub fell 91¢ to average $5.11. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were down 20¢ at $7.83. In the Northeast, Boston-area Algonquin advanced 29¢ to average $7.25. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose 20¢ to $7.02, SoCal Citygate advanced 22¢ to average $7.47 and Northwest Sumas lost 4¢ to average $6.90. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco rose 33¢ to $3.08 (Daily cash prices).

Virginia Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are sponsoring legislation to strengthen the public’s ability to both evaluate and provide input on natural gas pipelines being considered by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The proposed Pipeline Fairness, Transparency, and Responsible Development Act will in part clarify the circumstances under which eminent domain may be used in garnering right-of-way for projects and require public comment meetings in every locality through which a pipeline would pass at every stage of the review process. The way in which potentially impacted landowners are notified would also be beefed up.
