Market Watch

October gas futures tacked on 3.5¢ to $8.284 per million Btu Tuesday, consolidating Monday’s rise back into an $8/MMBtu range. Bulls continue to defy increasingly bearish trends in storage, weather and especially production as uncertainty over what the coming winter might bring prevents a significant selloff at this juncture. The 12-month strip rose 5.4¢ to $6.852; the 2023 calendar strip was up 5.3¢ to $6.209 (Futures contracts).

WTI October crude fell 47¢ to $87.31/bbl.

Alberta benchmark Aeco rose $1.01 to $4.41 as price gyrations continue in Western Canada. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were up 31¢ at $8.38. In the Northeast, Boston-area Algonquin advanced 23¢ to average $7.80. In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub rose 70¢ to average $6.97. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose 30¢ to $7.78 and SoCal Citygate advanced 73¢ to average $9.55 (Daily cash prices).

Two Canadian natural gas producers on Monday have temporarily reduced production due to pipeline bottlenecks that led to a collapse in Western Canadian gas prices in the second half of August. Tourmaline Oil, Canada’s largest gas producer, cut its third-quarter output by 1.5%, or 45 million cubic feet per day, although its full-year production guidance remains unchanged at 3 billion cubic feet per day. Kelt Exploration reduced output by 9 MMcf/d to around 174 MMcf/d. Maintenance-related constraints on Western Canada’s two main pipeline systems — Nova Gas Transmission Ltd in Alberta and Westcoast Transmission in British Columbia — have periodically stranded gas in Alberta and at WC Station 2 sending prices tumbling near and even below $0/MMBtu.

BP has agreed to purchase EDF Energy Services, expanding its presence in the US commercial and industrial retail power and gas business. Houston-Based EDF is a leading supplier of power, natural gas and related services to large end-users. Its customers are primarily large corporations and public entities, including retailers, universities, manufacturers and producers, municipalities and power generators. It does not supply residential consumers.
