Market Watch

On its first day as prompt month, the October gas futures contract fell 29.4¢ to $9.042 per million Btu. But more telling, the contract plunged as low as $8.865 in morning trading — a sign that bulls could be wavering as bearish trends become more pronounced. The 12-month strip averaged $7.342 with October in the lead; the 2023 strip lost 7.8¢ to $6.577 (Futures contracts).

WTI October crude plunged $5.37 to $91.64/bbl on concerns that fuel demand could soften as global central banks raise rates to fight surging inflation.

Cheniere Energy, already the largest US LNG exporter, has filed for more capacity with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Cheniere is mulling the addition of two additional trains at its Corpus Christi liquefaction and export terminal on the Texas Gulf Coast. Cheniere has already sanctioned a 10 million tons per year (1.4 Bcf/d) stage three, seven-train expansion, which should begin delivering supply in 2025. If approved, construction on the two-train addition would commence in 2024 and be in-service in 2031. The terminal now has 45 million tons/yr of capacity (5.3 Bcf/d).
