Market Watch

September gas futures lost an early surge into the $9.60s to end Friday's session 7.9¢ lower at $9.296 per million Btu, down 4¢ for the week. The 12-month strip was down 2.6¢ to $7.70; the 2023 calendar strip rose 1.8¢ to $6.564 (Futures contracts).

WTI October crude rose 54¢ to $93.06/bbl, up $1.29 for the week.

British Columbia's Westcoast Station 2 saw the most significant price move of the day, falling 35¢ to 97¢/MMBtu. Alberta benchmark Aeco fell 7¢ to $2.05. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were up 15¢ at $9.46. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went down $1.31 to average $8.83, while Boston-area Algonquin advanced 11¢ to average $8.86. In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub fell 35¢ to average $7.72. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal fell 7¢ to $8.59, SoCal Citygate declined 94¢ to average $8.94 and Northwest Sumas lost 2¢ to average $8.47 (Daily cash prices).

The US rig count climbed three to 765 last week, up 257 from a year ago. Gas-directed rigs declined one to 158, up 61 from a year ago, while oil rigs climbed four to 605, up 195 from a year ago. The data show the bulk of the increase in year-over-year activity is in the Permian Basin, up 99 rigs to 348, followed distantly by the Eagle Ford Shale, up 35 to 70. The Haynesville Shale rig count is up 25 at 70 (Rig counts).
