Market Watch

September gas futures settled at a fresh 14-year high Friday, rising 14.8¢ to $9.336 per million Btu, up 56.8¢ for the week. But that $9 handle may prove slippery with late August temperatures falling just below the norm in Texas and the Deep South. The 12-month strip rose 6.8¢ to $7.613; the 2023 strip was up 1.1¢ to $6.39 (Futures contracts).

WTI September crude rose 27¢ to $90.77. The contract will expire on Monday.

The data show the bulk of the increase in year-over-year activity is in the Permian Basin, up 98 rigs to 345, followed distantly by the Eagle Ford Shale, up 37 to 72. The Haynesville Shale rig count is up 24 at 69 (Rig counts).
