Market Watch

September gas futures soared 67.2¢ to $8.874 per million Btu as a Gulf outage has bulls' sights set on $9/MMBtu gas. The unexpected shutdown at three Shell platforms, which could shut in roughly 200 million cubic feet of gas per day, trumped a bearish inventory report by reigniting concerns over winter gas storage inventories. However, the rally could be brief if the outage is as short as expected. The 12-month strip rose 46.5¢ to $7.197; the 2023 calendar strip was up 31.5¢ to $6.003 (Futures contracts).

WTI September crude rose $2.41 to $94.34/bbl.

The Energy Information Administration reported that 44 billion cubic feet of gas was injected into underground caverns during the week ended Aug. 5 bringing working gas inventories to 2,501 Bcf. The data is on par with the 45 Bcf five-year average and left the seasonal deficit at 338 Bcf, or 11.9%. The build mirrored last year's, keeping the year-on-year deficit at 268 Bcf, or 9.7% . The data was also more robust than the 39 Bcf analysts modeled based on cooling loads for the week, which implies a looser supply/demand balance. Nonetheless, any bearish sentiment evaporated with news of the Shell outage (Storage).

Production at three large Shell platforms in the US Gulf of Mexico was stopped on Thursday due to a small leak at a connected onshore facility, although the stoppage is not expected to last long. Shell said it shut its Mars and Amberjack pipelines that link its deepwater Mars, Ursa, and Olympus platforms to shore due to a leak at the Fourchon booster station in the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port. Port of Fourchon officials confirmed to Energy Intelligence that the spill involved only about 2 barrels of crude, took place on land and within the containment zone, and that a contractor was already on site to repair the issue. The fix is expected to take roughly a day, port officials said.
