Market Watch

September gas futures continued to flag Friday as this week's bearish storage data trumps news of Freeport LNG's expected return in October. The prompt month fell 5.8¢ to $8.064 per million Btu, down 16.5¢ for the week. The 12-month strip fell 3.1¢ to $$6.626; the 2023 calendar strip was down 1¢ at $5.603 (Futures contracts).

WTI September crude rose 47¢ to $89.01/bbl.

British Columbia's Westcoast Station 2 saw the most significant price move of the day, falling $1.17 to $1.52. Alberta benchmark Aeco fell 95¢ to $2.51. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were down 25¢ at $8.14. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went up 3¢ to average $7.91, while Boston-area Algonquin declined 7¢ to average $8.42. In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub fell 39¢ to average $6.84. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal fell 33¢ to $7.76, SoCal Citygate declined 34¢ to average $9.57 and Northwest Sumas lost 1¢ to average $7.67 (Daily cash prices).

The US rig count fell by three to 764 last week, down 273 from a year ago. Gas-directed rigs climbed four to 161, up 58 from a year ago, while oil rigs fell seven to 598, up 211 from a year ago. The data show the bulk of the increase in year-over-year activity is in the Permian Basin, up 104 rigs to 347 (Rig counts).
