Market Watch

September gas futures plunged 57.7¢ Tuesday to settle at $7.706 per million Btu. Fifty-cent-plus losses stretched into winter 2023, stripping $8 handles off every contract through next February. Gas market bulls have kept the near strip above $8/MMBtu since Jul. 22 when a heat wave in the central US began expanding. However, buyers are growing wary of buying $8/MMBtu September supply, one analyst said. The 12-month strip fell 38.3¢ to $6.369; the 2023 calendar strip was off 25.1¢ to $5.417 (Futures contracts).

WTI September crude rose 53¢ to $94.42/bbl.

The Biden administration has agreed to advance the long-stalled Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) project as part of a broader permitting reform plan in Congress, a spokesperson for Energy and Natural Resources Chair Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) said. Support by congressional leadership and the White House for MVP is considered quid pro quo for Manchin’s support for a budget reconciliation package on climate, taxes and health care. Legislation in the works requires federal agencies to take “all necessary actions” to reissue vital permits allowing the pipeline to proceed. MVP was 94% complete when its key federal permits were vacated by a federal appeals court.
