Market Watch

Natural gas markets continued to rally Friday as a blistering July heatwave expanded into major gas markets across US and sent August futures soaring 36.7¢ to $8.299 per million Btu, up $1.283 for the week. The 12-month strip rose 25.6¢ to $7.011; the 2023 calendar strip was up 12.3¢ to $5.718 (Futures contracts).

WTI September crude fell $1.65 to $94.70/bbl, down $2.87 for the week.

The Pacific Northwest border crossing at Sumas, Washington, saw the most significant cash price move of the day, falling $2.06 to $5.31. In Canada, Alberta benchmark Aeco fell 29¢ to $3.74. This compared to benchmark Henry Hub cash prices that were up 13¢ at $8.13. In the Northeast, Transco zone 6 New York went down 65¢ to average $8.75, while Boston-area Algonquin declined $2.69 to average $9.40. In West Texas, cash prices at the Permian's Waha Hub rose 24¢ to average $7.74. Meanwhile, Rockies leader Kern/Opal rose 26¢ to $7.95 and SoCal Citygate declined 7¢ to average $8.69 (Daily cash prices).

The US rig count climbed two to 758 last week, up 272 from a year ago. Gas-directed rigs climbed two to 155, up 51 from a year ago, while oil rigs held at 599, up 212 from a year ago. The data show the bulk of the increase in year-over-year activity is in the Permian Basin, up 107 rigs to 349, followed distantly by the Eagle Ford Shale, up 38 to 70. The Haynesville Shale rig count is up 20 at 68 (Rig counts).
