Market Watch

After an extraordinarily volatile month, the July gas futures contract limped into expiration on Tuesday, rising 5¢ to settle at $6.551 per million Btu. The August contract, which takes the prompt month slot Wednesday, inched 2.4¢ higher at $6.57/MMBtu. The July expiry was 30% below its peak on Jun. 6, two days before a fire and explosion shut the Freeport LNG export terminal and took more than 2 billion cubic feet per day of demand off the market. Analysts with Gelber & Associates said weather forecasts released Wednesday show a modest increase in cooling degree days over the next two weeks, which should keep a floor under futures barring any significant changes on the supply front. The 12-month strip rose 1.7¢ to $6.10; the 2023 strip was down 0.6¢ to $5.245 (Futures contracts).

WTI August crude rose $2.19 to $111.76/bbl.
