The oil and gas industry is taking an increasingly passive approach to the energy transition — with potentially detrimental consequences for society and its own future. Executives are right to note they cannot move ahead of shifts in demand or sacrifice returns, but that cannot be an excuse for inactivity regarding market development. In our view, proactive partnerships with early adopters willing to pay “green premiums” and alliances with new industries to develop end-use markets must become leading strategic priorities.
