July gas futures climbed 6.7¢ Wednesday to $2.329 per million Btu. The jump in prices comes a day after the US Energy Information Administration predicted Henry Hub spot prices would increase to average just above $2.60/MMBtu in the third quarter. “Rising natural gas use in the electric power sector and flattening production growth — which together contribute to storage injections that are less than the five-year average … in the coming months — are the primary drivers,” the EIA said in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook.
