We see BlackRock CEO Larry Fink’s closely watched letter to investors last week as the latest sign that major US financiers are struggling with how to square the circle on managing climate risk as investment risk, while avoiding stoking an energy-led macroeconomic crisis and inviting rising political scrutiny. Although major US index funds appear to be taking a more pragmatic approach to the continued role of oil and gas, strategic demands are by no means uniform, and tightening emissions standards are becoming increasingly commonplace in other corners of financial markets.
