Proponents see them as a means to help companies advance decarbonization efforts, channeling funds to emission-cutting projects and mobilizing much-needed private climate finance for developing countries. Critics point to problems that could undermine global climate efforts, arguing that offsets are difficult to monitor and verify, and could also delay decarbonization by allowing companies to claim net-zero progress without directly cutting emissions — so-called greenwashing. While the truth may lie somewhere in between, a cautionary approach may be wise.
