Gripes on ESG Methods

Rather than politicization, the main issue with ESG investing is the lack of standardization in data and methodologies, according to participants the Wall Street Green Summit earlier this week. The summit, which aims at supporting sustainable finance, is mostly attended by startup companies and investors and this year's theme was decarbonization. Beyond data and the related issue of measurement, reporting and verification, a key topic was carbon dioxide removal, notably nature-based solutions such as forestry and agricultural soil management. Speakers insisted that carbon offsets should not be taken as a excuse to produce more fossil fuels, nor as a permanent solution to residual emissions. They should instead be seen as a temporary but indispensable tool as decarbonization is not going fast enough to keep the Paris agreement's goals in sight.
