Created to promote regional gas cooperation, the East Mediterranean Gas Forum is now planning to broaden its membership to North African states as Europe urgently turns to the southern Mediterranean shoreline for its gas supply. With an eye on the future, all sides are also exploring closer collaboration on renewable electricity and hydrogen supply amid the transition to a low-carbon economy. Regional gas supply and development projects are advancing rapidly between Egypt and Israel and more tentatively between the Palestinians and Egypt. But ties between Lebanon and Egypt face more hurdles.
