Australia's legislature is debating a strengthening of its emissions reduction plan, in a move that would impact many oil and gas projects in the resource-rich nation. But political divisions — centered on how far the reform should go — are threatening to derail the effort. At the heart of the controversy is the country's Safeguard Mechanism, a scheme successfully pushed by the Liberal-National coalition back in 2016 to limit emissions from Australia’s largest emitting facilities.
