The integrated team unveiled last week by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for its first-of-a-kind BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) newbuild at Darlington is part of an attempt to avoid some of the structural problems that have plagued nuclear newbuilds over the past 20 years. Building on the success of Ontario's multi-billion dollar refurbishments of many of its large Candu reactors, OPG and architect-engineer SNC-Lavalin, technology supplier GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy and constructor Aecon will work under the "integrated project delivery" (IPD) model that pools much of the possible risks and rewards of a newbuild.
