Turkey is on course to silence industry skeptics by bringing the first phase of its massive Sakarya offshore gas project on stream by the end of the first quarter. Both public announcements and private conversations with industry sources all point to Turkey’s first major gas project starting up on schedule at breakneck speed just 32 months after its August 2020 discovery announcement, with the first phase expected to produce 10 million cubic meters per day of gas, equivalent to some 3.65 billion cubic meters per year. Turkey’s ultimate goal is to declare energy independence from foreign oil and natural gas as soon as possible, its veteran President Recep Tayipp Erdogan declared.
