Save for later Print Download Share LinkedIn Twitter Portugal announced plans to hold a national green hydrogen and biomethane auction this year, as part of Europe-wide moves to seek a reduced role for unabated natural gas by boosting low-carbon gases. The Iberian country plans to create a centralized buying entity that directly signs deals for wholesale imports and then sells purchased volumes to gas sector players at a discount. This will be crucial for the development of low-carbon gases in the EU, which plans to import some 10 million tons of green hydrogen per year by 2030 and produce 10 million tons domestically. Experts expect 2023 will be the year that low-carbon hydrogen transforms from hype to a more robust energy transition subsector.
