We see Shell’s $2 billion purchase of Danish biomethane producer Nature Energy as the latest sign of majors accepting that natural gas must be cleaner if it is to play a role in the transition. The move follows a similar acquisition by BP last month, while Chevron earlier this year bought biofuels producer Renewable Energy Group and TotalEnergies has been the largest shareholder in US biogas firm Clean Energy since 2018.
