The strategy of United Airlines to accelerate deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) involves vertical integration into start-up producers. Last week the carrier announced its third direct investment in a SAF producer, this time spending $32 million for a stake in Oregon-based Next. Launched just last year, United Airlines Ventures is developing a portfolio that spans a wide range of projects, from SAF suppliers to electric and vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (VTOL), to carbon capture and sequestration.
