Carbon markets are advancing both at the national level and globally, based on a growing realization that an array of trading opportunities would be needed as climate targets tighten over time. Those are top messages from the head of the International Emissions Trading Association, Dirk Forrister, in an interview with Energy Intelligence. At the national level, a trend has emerged in which countries are favoring taste tests — in which they undergo trials or focus first on voluntary markets before committing to firmer carbon pricing programs. At the international level, meanwhile, talks are progressing around carbon market linkages following last year's long-awaited agreement on Article 6 of the Paris agreement, which allows for countries and regions to cooperate toward compliance with their emissions pledges.
