Save for later Print Download Share LinkedIn Twitter European budget airline easyJet has revealed plans to abandon its trailblazing carbon offset program in order to invest more in technologies that directly decarbonize aviation. EasyJet has offset nearly 8.7 million tons of carbon since launching its scheme to offset 100% of passenger carbon emissions on Nov. 18, 2019. That program will be replaced with a voluntary offsetting option for customers from Jan. 1, 2023 with the money going instead towards developing zero carbon emissions hydrogen aircraft. In a Sep. 26 statement, easyJet said using hydrogen across its entire fleet would cut carbon intensity by 78% from 2019 levels by 2050. The airline’s partnership with Rolls-Royce will soon reach a significant milestone when the first ground tests of the pair’s hydrogen engine take place later this year.
