September gas futures soared 67.2¢ to $8.874 per million Btu as a Gulf outage has bulls' sights set on $9/MMBtu gas. The unexpected shutdown at three Shell platforms, which could shut in roughly 200 million cubic feet of gas per day, trumped a bearish inventory report by reigniting concerns over winter gas storage inventories. However, the rally could be brief if the outage is as short as expected. The 12-month strip rose 46.5¢ to $7.197; the 2023 calendar strip was up 31.5¢ to $6.003 (Futures contracts).
