September gas futures rose 36.9¢ to $8.202 per million Btu Wednesday after models began circulating showing a potential hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico late next week. "This doesn't look like a genuine threat, but oil and gas traders are online message boards and stuff spreads like wildfire even if it's meaningless," a source tells Energy Intelligence. But whether September gas pushes past resistance in the $8.20s could depend on storage data released Thursday. The 12-month strip rose 25.2¢ to $6.732; the 2023 calendar strip was up 16.7¢ to $5.688 (Futures contracts).
