Enthusiasm for gas-to-liquids (GTL) technologies flamed out earlier this century as high-profile projects proposed in North America by GTL giants Shell and Sasol failed to advance. Massive cost overruns for multibillion-dollar megaprojects gave the technology a bad reputation and the emergence of LNG pushed GTL out of the spotlight last decade.
