Save for later Print Download Share LinkedIn Twitter Leading jet fuel supplier Shell Aviation has launched a “book and claim” (B&C) system for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) used by business travelers in conjunction with Accenture and American Express Global Business Travel. Designed to give airlines access to the buying capacity of those businesses willing to share SAF’s price premium, Avelia uses blockchain technology to aggregate global business demand for SAF and apportion environmental credits without the risk of double counting. “Avelia will [also] help trigger demand for SAF at scale, providing confidence to suppliers like us to further increase investment in production, and in turn helping to lower the price point for these fuels,” said Shell Aviation President Jan Toschka at the Jun. 20 launch. SAF is currently two to eight times the price of conventional jet fuel but offers an 80% reduction in carbon emissions.
