The Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub in the western US is a first-of-its-kind project gaining attention for several reasons, including its serious backers and its innovative pairing of technologies. Construction is under way at the Utah-based project after developers closed on a more than $500 million loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy (DOE) — the first such guarantee issued in more than a decade. The project would convert renewable energy through electrolysis into clean hydrogen that can be stored at large volumes underground and tapped during periods of high power demand, seeking to solve one of the biggest challenges in the deployment of intermittent wind and solar power.
