Russia’s aviation sector is staring down a dark tunnel after Western governments imposed financial and technology sanctions and closed their airspace to Russian airlines. Strong air travel growth within the country during the pandemic expanded its domestic market by 24% last year versus 2019 levels. But massive downsizing seems inevitable with the loss of leased aircraft and flight bans to North America and Europe. Only state intervention can save the industry from collapse.
