Lufthansa Group is working with Swiss sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) firm Synhelion to bring its carbon neutral “sun-to-liquid” fuel to market. The fuels offer a way of harnessing solar power for aviation without the need for new aircraft propulsion systems. Construction of Synhelion’s first commercial SAF plant in Julich, Germany is due to start this year with Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss set to become the first airline to use the fuel sometime in 2023. A second sun-to-liquid plant is already planned in Spain.
