The US Department of Energy (DOE), the agency that bears responsibility for permanent disposal of the nation's civilian nuclear waste, is taking what might be described as a band-aid approach to the task: launching a process aimed at identifying interim waste storage sites by securing public buy-in for the sites it selects.
