Refiners in the US are headed into a period of strong margins following two years of dismal returns. A number of confluent factors should prop up income from downstream operations, even in the face of current high prices for crude oil. Demand recovery is one key ingredient for the bullish outlook. While jet fuel consumption still lags usage of other transportation fuels, indications that countries are starting to lift Covid-19 travel restrictions could provide significant upward momentum.
