A combination of growing environmental liabilities and a dearth of buyers for aging assets is beginning to push companies to wind down these assets themselves. Centrica now plans to deplete and decommission its remaining North Sea gas fields after failing to find buyers that it believes could decommission them responsibly. In doing so, the UK energy conglomerate offers a glimpse into the fate of aging assets and corporate approaches to managing them.
