  • Eni has launched the IPO process for its retail and renewables (R&R) arm, Plenitude, making it the first oil major to spin off a clean energy business. 
  • The planned flotation will be a moment of truth for Western majors and investors who are looking for the right business model to create value while addressing the energy transition. 
  • The jury is still out on spinoffs, with most majors ruling out such a move, but if the Plenitude IPO is successful investors could force the issue.
