Solutions are emerging swiftly for hard-to-decarbonize sectors like steel and refining, with Europe's decarbonization efforts offering a preview of techniques that may be eyed globally. Just like other regions targeting carbon neutrality, the EU's plans to go net zero by 2050 will require gas and other fossil fuels used in energy-intensive sectors to be addressed somehow — whether the emissions are captured and stored, replaced by greener molecules or electrified. EU data shows that the heat and power sector accounted for 25% of carbon dioxide emissions in 2019, refining for 3%, and steel and cement production for 2% each.
