Free-falling December gas futures reversed course Thursday, gaining 26.9¢ to $5.134 per million Btu. Fundamentals had little to do with the market surge; in fact, storage and weather optics are growing more bearish. However, it's still not clear what mid- to late-winter has in store by way of heating loads. The 12-month strip jumped 16.5¢ to $4.419; the 2022 calendar strip rose 15.2¢ to $4.352 (Futures contracts).
