The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is relaxing the rules for nuclear power plants transitioning from generating electricity to decommissioning after two of the three commissioners this week approved a long-standing staff proposal. The decision comes even after the state of New York — joining a chorus of activists — legally challenged the rigorousness of the regulatory body's decision-making on the license transfer of the Indian Point power plant to Holtec International for decommissioning.
