Heading into winter, amid a politically explosive gas price crisis, the EU may have to reconsider its approach to the intractable Western Sahara conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, the exiled group demanding independence for the disputed territory. An Algerian piped gas supply contract to Spain via Morocco is set to expire by end-October. Madrid has already taken preventive measures to secure supplies. But Brussels is acutely aware that improved ties between North African neighbors Algeria and Morocco are vital to address its energy, security and migration concerns.
