Domestic jet fuel consumption rose 7.9% in September as passenger traffic picked up with the easing of pandemic restrictions. The South Asian nation consumed 409,000 tons (107,000 b/d) of aviation fuel last month compared with 379,000 tons (102,000 b/d) in August. Demand was 31% higher than September last year. The recovery should accelerate now that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has permitted carriers to operate at full capacity from Oct. 18. Capacity limits have gradually risen to current levels of 85%, up from just 33% in May last year. Indian airlines were grounded for two months last year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown in March 2020.
